no reported breach of david petraeus's systems. any e-mail was not his cia e-mail. it was not like the former director who got busted taking home classified information on his home laptop. so this was not a national security matter. and it was not a criminal matter. so why was this brought up to the director of national intelligence by the fbi. we do not know. what we do know is once james clapper, head of the national intelligence, found out about the affair on election day, he urged david petraeus to resign. the following day, wednesday, mr. clapper reportedly notified staff at the white house and the following day, thursday, general petraeus sat down with president obama directly. the president did not accept his resignation initially that day. he didn't accept it until the following day, until friday. that's when it all became public. here's another question, though. why did the fbi investigation start here in the first place? what we're told about why it started is a woman who was not having an affair, she received e-mails that she perceived as threatening and

among those generals, of course, david petraeus. also contributing editor for foreign policy as well. thomas, thank you so much for coming in. you write today that a source told you that president obama tried to talk general petraeus out of resigning. we just heard the same thing from john harwood as well. tell me what you're hearing. >> well, first of all, there aren't going to be any criminal charges in this. this is really a tempest in a teapot. the sad thing is general petraeus is probably the most famous general we've had since world war ii. here is a guy who did a terrific job in both iraq and then had a harder time, but still served well in afghanistan. the idea that somebody would be out in the desert for six and a half years and slips somehow with a personal indiscretion, what we approved here is the david petraeus is a human being. i think it also says a lot more about us as a country than it does about david petraeus. in world war ii, if we held dwight eisenhower to this standard, he would have been fired. matthew ridgway

i mean, i think david is exactly right. you're going to see david petraeus. he's going to pick himself up and take the rear-view mirrors off, right? and will be back in public life. but like any military campaign, he's got to sort of work his way through it. he'll deal with the family first and then have to do the inevitable first interviews and first public appearances and chart the way forward and as a nation we want him to do that. he needs to be part of the public policy debate. he's smart. an extraordinary public servant. made a mistake. we want him to find the way back in to public life because we need smart voices like his. i say death by a thousand cuts because literally every hour we learn one more fact. who knew at the when you say and when they knew. we find out that the general did admonish broadwell to not send the harassing e-mails and because the facts come out a little bit at a time, they dribble out, it keeps this -- breathes oxygen in to a story that otherwise we all ought to be kind of tired of at this point. >> you heard tom ricks, tom, th
